In 2001 the Sardinian newspaper L’Unione Sarda featured Gianfranco Atzeni, originally from Sant’Andrea Frius, and his wood-fired oven with separate combustion.
“Il forno a legna di monsieur Atzeni, un “gioiello” per cuocere pane, pizze, dolci e carne.”
The report traces his journey: childhood in Belgium as part of an emigrant family, his apprenticeship in metalworking and years spent working on international industrial sites. It then tells of his return to Sardinia, the founding of the artisan business and the development of a metal oven whose firebox is separate from its cooking chamber.
The article describes the original cylindrical oven, its rotating cooking surface and handcrafted production, one oven at a time. It mentions orders from across Italy and Belgium, highlighting the connection between technical experience and craftsmanship.
Today his son, Dr Antonio Salvatore Atzeni, continues the project through Ditta Atzeni Antonio, building SAF ovens himself and expanding the original Model 90 range with the Quadro and Sardegna models.
